Carving - level 4

There is no doubt that you will have seen other skiers charging down the slopes looking relaxed, strong and confident, and it doesn’t even look like there is much effort going into their skiing!!

So how’s it done?

Skiers use 3 elements to make a turn, pressure, edge and rotation. Learning to ski with an emphasis on each element will enable you to ski all types of terrain. A talented skier may use more pressure when skiing off-piste or slush, and more rotation on steep, icy or bumpy terrain. Fast and efficient skiers will be using a carving technique which places the emphasis on the edging element, utilising the shape and technology that the ski has on offer. The ski works for the skier, and this technique is accessible to all skiers nowadays with the modern carving ski.

However just buying or renting a pair of carving skis will not make you carve turns, you have to experiment with the techniques that we can teach you, by learning to

  • tilt your skis on their edges allowing the skis to turn (carve) rather than physically turning the feet (skidding)
  • increase the speed at which you ski by carving every turn
  • vary your speed and line whilst carving by adjusting the range and rate at which you make lateral movements
  • leave two clean lines behind you – just like train tracks!

Techniques are developed in practice drills using moderate slopes, gradually building to steeper gradients. Practice reinforces these new skills by developing them from awareness skills to automatic ones. The end result is a strong dynamic skier who can tackle a wide range of challenging skiing, with high quality movements, consistency and confidence.

train & compete - from 1 week to 6 weeks, start with carving and move to racing gates
