Racing - level 5/6
Have you got the carving bug.....it’s addictive, we all agree!!
Looking to get more from your skiing and challenge yourself, how about a little racing – put that speed and control of line together and test it! As a fun challenge, to enter the discipline of ski racing, to access the race circuit or simply for personal performance, Ski Focus can help you to achieve your goals.
The first recorded date in history linked to the sport of ski racing came in 1850 when Sondre Norheim, of Telemark, discovered the perfect heel strap, where he cleverly entwined shoots of the birch tree root, which gave enough stiffness to provide sufficient control of the ski to steer it and enough elasticity to stay snugly around the heel to keep the toe in the toestrap even going off a jump, making possible both modern downhill and ski-jumping. (HerW1996 p7)
The second date of interest to us was when in 1921 the first modern slalom race was organised - the Alpine Ski Challenge Cup, held at Mürren, Switzerland, on Jan. 6.
Since these dates ski racing has developed somewhat, and has now become accessible both on snow and on artificial slopes to those skiers wishing to develop their skiing either as children/teenagers looking to join teams, or as adults to challenge ourselves.
Techniques are developed in practice drill courses using short gates on moderate slopes, gradually building to full size gates and steeper gradients. Practice reinforces these new skills by developing them from awareness skills to automatic ones. The end result is a strong dynamic skier who can tackle a wide range of challenging skiing, with high quality movements, consistency and confidence.
